Developing an HR Communication Strategy

Do you find yourself in a position of designing and implementing HR programs, processes and procedures? How are those programs communicated to employees and leadership to create buy-in?  In this workshop, you will learn how to create a communication plan to bring clarity and buy-in to HR messages and programs. 


At this lab, attendees will create a communication plan to engage stakeholders, ensure objectives are communicated and measure results. With a communication plan in hand, attendees with be ready to communicate HR programs and initiatives effectively in the workplace.

Attendees will learn:

  • How to define your audience and stakeholders
  • How to define objectives of the message
  • How to measure what we are trying to change

As manager of Internal Communications at WPX Energy, Melissa Clark, APR, builds and maintains trust with one of WPX Energy's key stakeholders, its employees. Her work includes engaging employees to drive productivity along with counseling executives on employee communications. 

Clark has worked in television, higher education, non-profits and health care before joining the corporate world where she worked in the fast-moving telecom industry and now the energy industry. Working in the corporate arena with publicly traded companies for the past 20 years, Clark has worked extensively with change management, having served as a communications strategist for various corporate changes, including an Initial Public Offering, two corporate spinoffs, one corporate bankruptcy, numerous down sizings and restructurings as well as multiple divestitures and acquisitions.

A Tulsa native, Clark graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Missouri's School of Journalism.

In 2012, Clark was named as Tulsa's PR Professional of the Year by the Tulsa Chapter of PRSA. In 2010, Clark was named as one of the inaugural members of the Tulsa Business Journal's "Women of Distinction" in recognition for her contributions in the business and non-profit communities. As a Leadership Tulsa graduate, she has been nominated twice, consecutively, for a Paragon Award. In addition to her full time work, Clark manages her own communications consulting business and has served in leadership positions on a variety of local boards supporting women, children and education, including the Tulsa Historical Society, Rotary Club of Tulsa, Fab Lab Tulsa, Public Relations Society of America and foundation boards for Booker T. Washington High School, Carver Middle School, and the 4-H Foundation.

TAHRA is recognized by SHRM to offer Professional Development Credits (PDCs) for the SHRM-CP® or SHRM-SCP®. This program is valid for 2.00 PDCs for the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP. For more information about certification or recertification, please visit shrmcertification.org.
