Categories: HR Event

Presented by Jessica Heavin, MS, LPC, NCC

For the Learning Lab in June, TAHRA is offering a 8 hour course on Mental Health First Aid. This course has been approved for 8 hours of HRCI credit and 8 professional development credits from SHRM. For this lab, there are 25 spots available and the rate is $100 for attendees. The lab will be June 25th from 8:00am to 5:30pm with a one hour lunch (on your own) and two 15 minute breaks. This is a great opportunity for TAHRA members to attend this course at a reduced rate and gain valuable recertification credits while learning about Mental Health First Aid. Registration will only be open until we have reached the 25 maximum participants for this lab. We will not accept cancellations after June 19th. Register today to reserve your spot!

If you have prepaid for Learning Labs for 2015, please contact Julie Odom at eat0@eau0eav0eaw0 to register.

Mental Health First Aid is an 8-hour training course designed to give members of the public key skills to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Just as CPR training helps a layperson without medical training assist an individual following a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid training helps a layperson assist someone experiencing a mental health crisis.

The evidence behind Mental Health First Aid demonstrates that it makes people feel more comfortable managing a crisis situation and builds mental health literacy - helping the public identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness. Specifically, studies found that those who trained in Mental Health First Aid have greater confidence in providing help to others, greater likelihood of advising people to seek professional help, improved concordance with health professionals about treatments, and decreased stigmatizing attitudes.

Learning Objectives

  1. Recognize the potential risk factors and warning signs for a range of mental health problems, including: depression, anxiety/trauma, psychosis and psychotic disorders, substance use disorders, and self-injury.
  2. Use a 5-step action plan to help an individual in crisis connect with appropriate professional help.
  3. Interpret the prevalence of various mental health disorders in the U.S. and the need for reduced negative attitudes in their communities.
  4. Apply knowledge of the appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help resources available to help someone with a mental health problem treat and manage the problem and achieve recovery.
