Accounting is referred to as the “language of business.” Financial statements tell a story. This workshop will assist HR professionals with sharpening financial acumen in order to understand key financial statements and speak the language of business. 

At this lab you will:

• Learn how to interpret balance sheets, income statements, and other key financial data.
• Understand the difference between profit and cash.
• Understand the corporate budget.
• Gain confidence in discussions involving accounting and finance.

Melanie Harvey is an Assistant Professor of Professional Practice for the School of Accounting in the Spears School of Business at Oklahoma State University (OSU). She joined the faculty in 2016 and teaches primarily at the OSU-Tulsa campus. Courses taught by Melanie include Intermediate Accounting, Cost Accounting, Fundamentals of Oil & Gas Accounting, and Foundations of Accounting. Melanie has over 14 years of professional accounting experience. The majority of her career was at Chesapeake Energy Corporation where she held various accounting and finance leadership roles in the areas of midstream, oil & gas marketing, financial reporting, corporate planning, system implementations, and drilling services. She began her career in public accounting as an auditor for KPMG. Melanie is also a graduate of OSU with Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in accounting. She maintains her CPA license in the state of Oklahoma, and she still enjoys working on oil & gas accounting projects for companies in the area.
