Put your Best Voice Forward: Voicing Challenging Conversations

Categories: TAHRA Program Meeting

Presented by Rena Cook

People form judgements about us the moment we open our mouths to speak. Rena will provide us with information about our own voices, how to look and sound authentic and present with confidence within any communication dynamic. She will arm us with knowledge and vocabulary for helping managers, sales personnel and employees to use voice more consciously and effectively.

  • Identify vocal behaviors that are barriers to effective communication and learn vocabulary for discussing voice issues as they pertain to performance evaluation and assessment.
  • Suggest exercises and resources that can lead to real and lasting change in employees’ vocal behavior.
  • Practice using your own voices in more effective and compelling ways when teaching or presenting.
  • Look at a model for handling challenging conversations.

Rena Cook, OU Professor Emerita, TEDx speaker, is a voice, speech and presentation coach. Through her consultancy Vocal Authority, she helps professionals who want to up their communication skills. She is the author of three books on the speaking voice, including Empower your Voice: For Women in Business, Politics and Life. She has a Master’s Degree in Voice Studies from London’s Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. Her secret pleasure is voicing video game characters.
